IN THE KITCHEN, CESSIE sank into a chair, put her hands in her face and cried. When the surfeit of emotion subsided, she felt spent, but calmer. She dried her face and blew her nose with a monogrammed handkerchief, and then rose to warm and spice wine.

As the fragrant brew heated, she stared out the window, although there was nothing to see but white. She pressed her hands tightly together and prayed because this wasn’t the sort of storm everyone survived.

Chapter Twenty

Tommy Medlin reached his front porch and turned just in time to see the signal from the front porch of the longhouse. Two long back and forth swings of the lantern indicated all was well and everyone accounted for. There was a pause and then the signal repeated, although he could barely see it through the wind-driven snow. He hefted his lantern up and down to let Wood know he’d seen the signal. When that signal was repeated, he stomped to get rid of some of the snow from his boots and then stepped inside, knowing Wood would do the same. They were as prepared as possible for the storm. Now there was nothing to do but wait it out.

Tommy shut the door and leaned against it relishing the warmth and quiet. But Caty calling out, followed by Em’s panic-stricken voice calling the name of their youngest daughter propelled him back into motion. He hurried through the house and turned into the kitchen, nearly colliding with Lily, who was holding Ben. She’d come over earlier to help Em. The girl quickly stepped out of his way, her eyes round with fear. Caty, standing in middle of the kitchen, was clearly frightened.

Em had thrown open back door and was frantically calling for Juliana. He went to her.

“She went after the cat,” Em cried, clutching the front of his coat. “I was upstairs for a minute and she went out after the cat!”

“I’ll get her,” he pledged, already heading back out, grateful he hadn’t yet removed his outerwear. “Stay here.” The last words were an afterthought and the wind was so noisy, he wasn’t sure that she’d heard him.
